Alison Halse is eighteen, fresh out of high school, and terribly depressed. It's been seven years since her father tried to drown her in Devil's Lake, and the fear still lingers. It grows in her like a demon hellbent on making her miserable. She's terrified of water, afraid of people, and she's sick of her reoccurring panic attacks.

And so, today's the day, the day she ends it. Or is it? The journey back to the lake means entering a place some claim to be haunted by a dark power. And while Alison doesn't believe in such things, she does meet someone unique, someone who seems to have the power to conquer her inner demons. His name is Philip Dussault, and when she looks into his eyes, her world transforms. She feels wonderful and confident and like she could fall in love, but it happens all so quickly and when she leaves his company the peace goes away.

Maybe it's all in her head. Maybe she should have gone with him like he'd asked, or maybe searching for him is the most dangerous thing she could do. But she wants so much to find that peace again, and she keeps dreaming of him, dreaming that he's calling her to return to the lake yet again.
