There were over 1.7 million bachelor's degrees awarded last year, but only 7.9% of them were in the fields of science and math. This means that there are only a tiny number of people with the skills and education necessary to take on some of the huge problems we face like climate change, famine and disease.  We are trying to change that. We created JHAAS for one purpose: to promote the field of scientific research and to develop a new generation of young people who can face the challenges that we are going to have to face in the years to come.  To do that we want to target students who are at the critical point in their lives as they are preparing to leave high school and enter college.  Most STEM programs and outreach organizations completely ignore this group of people, and yet they are the ones who need the outreach the most.  We are confident that by giving students experience with science outside of the classroom and introducing them to the realities of the field of scientific research we can inspire them to take on the challenges we face as a global community in the present and into the future. We need your help to get our message out and start crowdfunding so we can set up these opportunities for students and start expanding our message past our local area.  We believe that every student should be given the chance to pursue a career in science, and that means that your help could potentially directly influence the life of someone who cures diseases or comes up with solutions for climate change.
