This campaign is launching on 11th June on Walacea.
Alopecia occurs when our immune system attacks the hair follicles that produce hair, causing baldness. It affects one in 50 people in the UK, often from a young age. At the moment there is no cure and no effective treatment so once hair falls out it often never grows back.
A biobank is a large collection of biological samples, that is gathered for research purposes and when biobanks are set up it gives scientists easy access to tissues to test their theories and understand conditions and potential treatments at a dramatically accelerated rate. The University of Glasgow already has biobanks for other diseases. With funding raised through this project they will create one for Alopecia. This will open up the floodgates to a whole range of research opportunities for scientists interested in autoimmune diseases and it will give alopecia sufferers new hope.
